Quick Menu

In this tutorial you learn how to make an object look like it's going quickly. Normally when a camera takes an image, depending on it's shutter speed and the speed of the object, there may be a motion blur.

No matter what, if the object is moving fast enough, it will look blurry - This you know. But you're about to know how to add that blur to anything! Follow along...

Let's begin with this excellent picture...

Star Wars in the playground...

Alright, the first thing we should do is grab the Lasso Tool - Keyboard shortcut L.

Getting ready for some motion blur on Darth VaderWe start by drawing an outline around the left subject in the swing. Follow along the edges closely.

Remember, if you let go of the left mouse button, you can can press and hold Shift to add to your current selection with the Lasso, and conversely hold control to whittle down your selection.

Once you've got him outlined, first save your selection: Select -> Save Selection (name it anything you want to).

Now press Ctrl + C and then Ctrl + V -This will a make your subject on the swing appear on a new layer. This is good because we want the blur to blur outwards without restriction of the selection border.

Now it's time to add that motion blur. Make sure your layer is lined up with the bottom layer, then click:

Filter -> Blur -> Motion Blur...

When presented with the new box set values to: Angle -15 and distance 14 pixels.

There we go, Star Wars at it's full glory

Now... You could say you are done, but you can go a bit further. Check the next page...
